Client Pre-Visit Detail Form

Welcome to Integrative Veterinary Services of Southeast Michigan ®

You may be visiting this site for a variety of reasons.  I have gathered from many clients a frustration in the limitations of western medicine, where medications and surgical procedures are often the mainstay approach to care.   Often my services are sought out because an animal can no longer tolerate medications, the medicine is losing its efficacy or the patient is a high risk candidate for anesthesia and surgery.  I also find that as people begin incorporating a more natural form of healing into their own lives, they start seeking it for their animals as well.

Before diving further into the information contained in this site, I would like to emphasize that the modalities of treatment I offer are mostly practiced from a Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine perspective (TCVM Theory).  I began studying eastern medicine theory due to a frustration of witnessing so many forms of chronic disease in our pets. Cancer, chronic organ failure, behavioral issues, skin and gastrointestinal disorders, just to name a few, are rampant in our pet populations.  In my studies and practice, I have learned there is something more we can offer – another approach to analyzing why our pets are suffering so much.  I believe poor nutrition and repeated vaccination are common denominators in our pet populations and can be contributors to poor health.  I realized that we have the ability to offer another dimension to the standard of care that conventional veterinary medicine provides.  In doing so, I need to emphasize and encourage that animal caregivers and the veterinary community embrace these options, not soley as the primary treatment, but incorporating them with conventional medicine and surgical options.  The goal is trying to achieve longevity with our pets and improving their quality of life while they are here with us in this lifetime.  The modalities offered by Integrative Veterinary Services of Southeast Michigan can help achieve this goal.
- Enjoy your visit,  Dr. Matt Januszewski, CVA, CVSMT

Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points on the body which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to achieve a desired effect.   Acupuncture has been practiced for nearly 4000 years on animals and humans and is the treatment of choice for one-quarter of the worlds population for many problems.  It is now being utilized by an increasing population of veterinarians for various conditions. Acupuncture is known to influence all major physiological systems, working primarily through the central nervous system affecting the musculoskeletal, hormonal and cardiovascular systems.

Chinese herbology is a vital component of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM).  Herbs can be used alone or to enhance other treatment modalities like acupuncture and food therapy. The majority of Chinese therapies include a combination of all three modalities.  Acupuncture will help balance the flow of Qi throughout the bodies meridians, while herbals will help nurture those meridians and promote their function on a maintenance basis.  Many clinical studies have indicated that Chinese herbal medicine can be very effective for treating medical disorders involving areas of dermatology, cardiology, respiratory, reproduction, oncology, gastroenterology, behavior and sports medicine.

Spinal manipulation therapy (i.e. chiropractic) involves the relationship between the nervous system and the spinal column and the critical role this relationship has in the maintenance of overall health.  The nervous system is responsible for initiating and coordinating all signals of movement by stimulating the muscles that are attached to the skeletal system. The bones of the spine are maintained in a specific alignment via the joint surfaces that connect one vertebrae to the next.  The nerves exit the spinal cord between these vertebral joint articulations.  If there is a misalignment (also referred to a subluxation), then the surrounding nerves, connective tissue, muscles, blood vessels, and lymphatics become affected, resulting in pathology or dysfunction.

Poor nutrition is a leading contributor to ill health, both in humans and our pets.  It is frustrating and unfortunate that eating healthy (whole foods) can be cost prohibitive for many people, especially when considering offering a more natural diet for their pets.  The dry kibble that is so highly engrained in our minds as something that is good to feed our pets should no longer be considered the ideal.  We all realize that processed foods have less nutritive value.  These foods also contain preservatives and other inappropriate ingredients that are not necessarily healthy for our pets.  Marketing can be a deceptive tool.
